#12. 6/23/11, 8pm: milligram office and John P. Hastings present an homage to Mies van der Rohe
On Thursday June 23, 2011 at 8pm, the Sound Series at Presents Gallery is pleased to present:
A performance/installation/homage to Mies van der Rohe by milligram office and John P. Hastings.
Mies van der Rohe is certainly one of the 20th century’s most influential architects, a leading proponent of what became known as the “International Style.” His use of highly refined raw materials (steel, glass, marble) and his functional aest…hetic — the “functionality” of which will be put to the test through these musical and architectural interventions — would arguably place him in the line of later Minimalist artists and composers.
The duo of Meredith Miller and James Graham (milligram office) will turn the space at Presents Gallery into a room-sized conceptualized reworking of one Mies’ most esteemed and curious design contributions: the cruciform column. Mr. Graham will give a presentation on “Mies van der Rohe and the Rhetoric of Structure,” while composer John P. Hastings will use the structural and proportional theories behind Mies’ buildings to create a tonal accumulation, an aural edifice to wrap the environment; this performance will be accompanied by series of visual interludes.
